Peripheral nerve stimulation (PNS) is a minimally invasive treatment for chronic peripheral nerve pain that uses mild electrical stimulation to change how pain signals are transmitted from an affected nerve. A small lead is placed near the targeted peripheral nerve using image guidance, allowing treatment to focus directly on the nerve responsible for the patient’s pain.
Peripheral nerve stimulation may be considered for patients with chronic nerve pain, peripheral nerve injuries, nerve entrapments, neuropathic pain, and persistent nerve pain after surgery. It can also provide an option for patients who have not experienced adequate relief from medications, physical therapy, injections, or previous surgical treatment.
Both temporary and longer-term peripheral nerve stimulation systems are available. The appropriate treatment depends on the nerve involved, the cause and duration of the patient’s symptoms, previous treatments, and response to diagnostic evaluation.
Because PNS targets the peripheral nerve associated with the pain, it can provide a non-surgical alternative for appropriately selected patients with chronic nerve pain.
