A diagnostic peripheral nerve block is an image-guided injection used to determine whether a specific nerve is responsible for a patient’s pain. A small amount of local anesthetic is placed around the suspected nerve, typically using ultrasound guidance for precise localization.
Diagnostic nerve blocks can be particularly helpful when evaluating nerve entrapment, peripheral nerve injuries, neuropathic pain, pain after surgery, and pain that has been difficult to diagnose. Temporary improvement after the injection can provide important information about the source of the patient’s symptoms.
The results of a diagnostic peripheral nerve block can help guide the next step in treatment, which may include rehabilitation, additional ultrasound-guided treatment, peripheral nerve stimulation, radiofrequency ablation, or referral to a peripheral nerve surgeon when appropriate.
