At the Peripheral Nerve Center at the Institute of Orthopedics, Spine & Sports, we offer advanced, minimally invasive treatments for peripheral nerve pain and injuries. Using both ultrasound and X-ray guidance, treatments can be precisely targeted to the affected nerve. Our goal is to identify the source of pain, restore function when possible, and provide effective alternatives to surgery when appropriate.
- Ultrasound-Guided Peripheral Nerve Injections
Using real-time ultrasound imaging, medication can be placed precisely around an irritated or injured peripheral nerve. These injections may be used both to help identify the source of nerve pain and to provide therapeutic relief.
- Nerve Hydrodissection
Ultrasound-guided nerve hydrodissection is a minimally invasive technique used for certain entrapped or compressed nerves. Fluid is carefully introduced around the affected nerve to help separate it from surrounding tissues that may be contributing to irritation or compression.
- Diagnostic Peripheral Nerve Blocks
When the exact source of pain is uncertain, a targeted diagnostic nerve block can help determine whether a specific peripheral nerve is responsible for a patient’s symptoms. The results can also help guide future treatment decisions.
- Peripheral Nerve Stimulation (PNS)
Peripheral nerve stimulation uses a small electrical lead placed near the affected nerve to modify pain signals before they reach the brain. Both temporary and longer-term PNS options may be considered for appropriately selected patients with chronic peripheral nerve pain, including some patients who continue to have pain despite previous treatments or surgery.
- Radiofrequency Ablation
For certain chronic pain conditions involving sensory nerves, radiofrequency ablation (RFA) may be used to interrupt pain signals from the affected area. This treatment may be considered when diagnostic nerve blocks demonstrate that a particular nerve is contributing to the patient’s pain.
- Regenerative Medicine
For selected nerve and musculoskeletal conditions, platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and other regenerative treatments may be considered as part of an individualized treatment plan.
- A Comprehensive, Non-Surgical Approach
Not every peripheral nerve condition requires a procedure, and not every condition should be treated without surgery. We focus on determining the cause of each patient’s symptoms and selecting the most appropriate treatment. When surgery is necessary, we collaborate with hand surgeons, orthopedic surgeons, peripheral nerve surgeons, neurologists, and other specialists to help patients receive the care they need.
Our goal is to provide patients with effective, minimally invasive options that may help relieve nerve pain and avoid surgery whenever medically appropriate.
